Worship at St. James

Worship is at the very heart of what we do and who we are as people of faith. All are welcome, and all are encouraged to receive Communion.

Sunday services

Our Communion services begin at 8:15 a.m. and 10:15 a.m. each Sunday. (Summer hours differ.) Our services of Holy Communion follow the Book of Common Prayer. We are accessible for people with disabilities.

Services are enhanced by parishioners serving as Acolytes, Eucharistic Ministers, Choristers, Lectors, Greeters, and Ushers. The Altar Guild prepares and adorns the sanctuary for each service.

Through the church year

St. James creatively commemorates church seasons, milestones, and holidays throughout the year. For example:

  • Palm SundayWe walk with a miniature donkey in a procession from a local park through downtown to the church.
  • Lent and EasterWe “bury” an Alleluia banner in a trunk during Lent, entrusting the key to one of our Sunday school children, and open the trunk at the start of the principal Easter service.
  • VeteransWe honor both living and deceased military veterans.
  • Outreach SundayWe recognize representatives of the many ministry partners we support.

Baptisms, weddings and funerals

To arrange any of these, call the parish office at 973-744-0270 or email the church office.

Baptism

Holy Baptism is initiation by water and the Holy Spirit into Christ’s body, the Church. This sacrament is open to infants, children, and adults who have not been previously baptized. Baptisms normally take place during Sunday services and are arranged in advance with the clergy.

Confirmation

Teens who desire to prepare for confirmation meet regularly with the clergy, participate in youth group, and attend services. Community service is also a component of preparation. Confirmations are held after Easter as scheduled by the diocese. Adults who would like to be confirmed, received or reaffirmed into the Episcopal Church meet with the clergy for preparation. Those confirmed in another faith tradition may be received by the Episcopal Church.

Weddings

Planning a wedding is a beautiful and joyful undertaking, and St. James welcomes your interest in being married in our church. Marriage is a sacramental rite in which a couple makes a solemn and public commitment to each other before God. The wedding liturgy of the Episcopal Church is used for the ceremony. At least one of the parties must be a baptized Christian. All couples meet with the clergy for marriage preparation.

Funerals

When a loved one dies, we recommend that you contact the church as soon as possible to discuss a funeral or memorial service at St. James. As an Episcopal Church, our services follow the liturgy for The Burial of the Dead in The Book of Common Prayer.
